Tamil Nadu government has announced that schools in the state will reopen from January 19, 2021. While announcing the dates to reopen the schools across the state, the TN government has also shared the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and guidelines regarding the same. To begin with, the schools will reopen only for students of classes 10 and 12.

As per the SOPs shared by the government, at any given time, not more than 25 students will be allowed to be present in a classroom. Also, the hostels have also been given permission to operate for the students allowed to attend school.

In addition to the SOPs regarding social distancing and sanitisation, the Department of Health has been instructed to provide vitamin and zinc tablets to all students to boost their immunity.  Schools in Tamil Nadu have been closed since March 2020 following the outbreak of the pandemic. The government asked all schools and took feedback from the authorities as well as parents before deciding to reopen the schools.

The government had in December shared its plan to reopen the schools after Pongal. Following the incident at IIT Madras, however, the authorities had decided to reconsider and collect more feedback. Barring the IIT Madras incident, however, no spike was found in Tamil Nadu. 

Over the past few weeks, Tamil Nadu has reported a steady decline in the number of cases. As on Monday, Tamil Nadu has reported 682 new infections and 6 deaths. The total active cases in the state stand at 6971.
