University Grants Commission (UGC) has announced a new fee refund policy for 2025-26 academic year, giving students more time to cancel admissions and get their money back.

As per UGC rules, students who cancel or withdraw their admission by September 30, 2025, will get a full refund of their fees. Those who cancel their admission till October 31, 2025, will get a refund after a small deduction of Rs 1,000 as a processing charge.

After October 31, the refund amount will depend on how close the withdrawal is to the last date of admission, following the earlier UGC guidelines. The UGC has also said that colleges must return the refund within 15 days of receiving the student’s request.

UGC notice clearly mentions that no institution should keep students’ original certificates during admission. Only self-attested copies can be taken for record. UGC in its notice has stated that many students had complained about colleges not refunding fees or delaying the process. The new rules aim to make the system more transparent and student-friendly.

All universities, colleges and deemed institutions must follow these guidelines. Any institute found violating them may face strict action from the Commission.
