Delhi University has commenced the academic session 2024-25 for newly admitted undergraduate students. Nearly 70,000 first-year students are all set to begin their journey at Delhi University colleges. Reportedly, the day 1 orientation programme went well in introducing students to their university culture, colleges, and academic expectations. Several colleges scheduled orientation sessions for the new batch of undergraduate students and organised interaction sessions with senior students and teachers. In order to keep the interest of students intact, UGC and Delhi University have released anti-ragging guidelines for students as provided below.
UGC Advises Universities to Enhance Anti-Ragging Protocols
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has requested all colleges and universities to strengthen their anti-ragging measures. The commission notified ragging as a criminal offence and has framed “Anti-Ragging Regulations on Curbing the Menace of Ragging in Higher Educational Institutions.”
The UGC has shared helpline details for students affected by ragging incidents. Students can contact the National Anti-Ragging Helpline at 1800-180-5522 (24x7 Toll-Free) or contact the Anti-Ragging Helpline through email at helpline@antiragging.in.
What Comes Under Ragging?
As per the UGC guidelines, The following shall come under ragging:
- if a student’s appearance or clothing is criticised, or if their self-respect is disobeyed shall be considered ragging.
- A student insulted on the basis of his/her ethnicity, caste, area, language, etc shall also be prevented under UGC Anti-ragging regulations.
- If a student is forced to perform any unethical task shall also be considered a ragging.
DU Anti-Ragging Policy
Delhi University has an anti-ragging policy which contains penalties for ragging including suspension, expulsion, degree cancellation and prohibition from attending classes and exams. Besides, all students including hostel residents, along with their parents or guardians have to sign an anti-ragging undertaking during admission.

Students can register their ragging instances through several platforms, including the UGC Anti-Ragging Helpline (1800-180-5522). Further, students can send their grievances concerning ragging at proctor@du.ac.in.
