Uttar Pradesh to build 'Sports University' in Meerut

The Uttar Pradesh government is planning to build a sports university in Meerut region. Reports suggest that the decision is taken to promote fitness among the youth. In order to process the construction, the government has allocated an amount of Rs 20 Crores for setting up the new sports institute. Reports also suggest that to build new sports facilities across the state and improve the existing ones, the UP state government also proposed a budget of Rs 8.55 Crores to ‘Yuva Khel Vikas Avam Protsahan Yojana’. This fund would also be utilised to help build interest in sports fields among the youth by making them aware of the various career opportunities. The fund introduction has been included in the annual state budget.
The government is diverting its focus to improving the sports facilities in the rural areas to increase opportunities for the youth. For the same, it has proposed to build rural stadiums and open gymnasiums in the state to give access to the sports facilities to village-dwellers.
Earlier, in February, Uttar Pradesh government promised the new Sports University during its annual budget presented by the state finance minister Suresh Khanna.
Meanwhile, the Haryana government on March 17 tabled a bill in the assembly for setting up a state-of-the-art sports university. Following "certain observations from the Centre", the Sports University of Haryana Bill, 2021 was tabled in the assembly after the government withdrew the previous Sports University Bill of Haryana, 2019. According to the reports, in order to remove objections raised by the central government, the fresh bill will be taken up for discussion on March 18.
