For Ph.D. Programs: Students can apply for admission through GATE, JEST, CSIR-NET, and UGC-NET Scores followed by a test and interview at IISc Bangalore.

Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai

TIFR is an autonomous research institute under the Department of Atomic Energy, Govt of India. It offers the finest research facility in findamental sciences in India. Established in 1945, TIFR is a national centre under the Government of India within the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE). It is a deemed university and one of the best research institutions in mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, computer science, and science education in Asia.

TIFR Admissions Procedure

Ph.D. and Integrated M.Sc.-Ph.D: By TIFR GS admissions entrance test held every year in December.

Subject Areas: The institute offers research opportunities at fundamental subjects which include Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, Computer & Systems Sciences.

Research Grants Provided by TIFR

Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)

CSIR Admission process

Admission for Ph.D.: Via CSIR-UGC National Eligibility Test (NET) – Joint CSIR-UGC NET for JRF (Junior Research Fellowship). Two exams are conducted in June and December.

For Project Assistantship positions: There are direct project-based recruitments advertised on individual laboratory websites.

Integrated Ph.D. program: Admission into certain CSIR institutions depends upon one's score in GATE or IIT JAM.

An applicant needs to clear an interview round conducted by a particular laboratory after clearing the national level examination.

TIFR Ranking and Research Grants

CSIR ranks high in Nature Index and SCImago rankings and contributes over 10% of India's patent applications every year. CSIR receives annual funding of more than INR 5,000 crore, along with additional support through extramural funding agencies such as SERB, DBT, and industries through New Millennium Indian Technology Leadership Initiative (NMITLI).

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO)

ISRO under the Department of Space is one of the top space organizations around the globe. Some research centers include VSSC (Thiruvananthapuram), SAC (Ahmedabad), URSC (Bangalore) and NRSC (Hyderabad). Areas of research are satellite, launch vehicle technology, Earth observation and planetary sciences.

ISRO Admissions Process

Scientists/Engineers: Selected based on an exam organized by ISRO Centralized Recruitment Board (ICRB) which involves written tests and interviews. Eligible candidates will be engineers/scientists.

Research Fellowships: ISRO provides Research Fellowships (IRF) to Ph.D scholars in some universities under RESPOND scheme (Research Sponsored Programme).

IIST (Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology), Thiruvananthapuram: Students for B.Tech and M.Tech programmes are selected via JEE Advanced examination; top students get recruited by ISRO directly.

Other institutions like IIT, IISc and NITs are engaged with ISRO in sponsored research projects.

Rankings & Research Grants

According to space organization rankings globally, ISRO stands 6th for number of active satellites. IIST is ranked amongst the best engineering colleges in India as per NIRF. The budget allocated to ISRO in the year 2024-25 was about INR 13,042 crore. The grants given by ISRO for research are through RESPOND and Space Technology Incubation Centres (S-TIC). As per details available in the official portal, over 1500 projects are sponsored yearly by ISRO.

Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR), Bangalore

JNCASR is an independent institute of DST, conducting frontier research in material science, chemistry, biology, and computational sciences. The institute is well recognized for its interdisciplinary research along with an active graduate school with a rich international presence.

Admissions & Rankings
