The basic prerequisites to become a pilot are mentioned below. Please check for your eligibility from the criteria mentioned below:
You must complete class XII under the 10+2 system or its equivalent with a minimum of 50 percent marks in maths and physics. You must be of at least 16 years of age to be eligible for a Student Pilot License, 17 for a Private Pilot License, and 18 for a Commercial Pilot License. Alternatively, you could directly enrol for the Private Pilot License once you have cleared class XII and are 17 years old. This involves taking an exam conducted by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation* consisting of theory papers on air navigation, aviation meteorology, air regulation and technical aspects. Your vision in one eye must be perfect. In general medical terminology, it is called 6/6 eyesight. In the other eye, you could have an imperfection of 6/9, which must be correctable to 6/6. General physical fitness is mandatory. You must be free of any disease that can hamper normal function. You need to complete the requisite number of hours, clear written papers and the medical examination. You need 70 percent marks to pass in each of these papers. The options are unlimited, as you have done your class 12th in science. With the combination of biology, physics and chemistry, you can take up medicine, dentistry, Pharmacy, agricultural science, dairy science or biological sciences (biochemistry, biotechnology, Microbiology). Apart from doing the degree level courses in science with the conventional combinations, you can also choose degree courses in several emerging professional areas, such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy, nursing, computer, business administration, hotel management, tourism management, etc. You can also opt for courses outside the university stream, such as hotel management, fashion technology, industrial design, packaging, aircraft maintenance engineering, government accredited computer courses and a host of post 10+2 level vocational courses. For pursuing a course in engineering, you should have maths as a compulsory subject in 10+2. However, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, www.aims.ac.in or www.aims.edu, offers B.Tech (Biotechnology) after class XII with Physics, Chemistry and Biology. To get admission in the top medical colleges in India, you would need to score above 90% in class 12th and do well in the entrance exam.
