CFA Exam

Hi, Of course, you can!
But it just cannot be a wild dream that I want to pursue CFA. Coming from an Engineering background, your first hurdle would be with accounting. The kind of preparation you need is going to be extensive, plus crossing CFA level 1 will not make you an overnight hit. Level 2 and above gets you the real respect. Let me break it down point by point -
Accounting background -
It is a need along with mastering other concepts from Finance and Economics. Just because you are good with maths and have an analytical side does not mean you will sail through. It is going to be challenging. You need to be dedicated, focused, join some form of coaching and stick to the routine. As we grow old sticking to the routine and studying 12 hours a day with focus becomes tough (ask me about it - just cant study something new for long)
2. Managing the gap -
Crossing level 1 is easy but to do that you need a minimum 6 months of preparation (1 year considering you would not be awesome in Accounting and Finance in Day 1). So by the time you would have crossed level 1, you would be a year older, your friends would be doing something or the other - post graduation, job etc. It is enough a distraction for you to get pulled into something else. The worst scenario - you make get a finance job which takes focus away from Level 2 which is the real deal. Continued focus for 2 years at a stretch with 12 hours a day study routine (unless you have been a state champion in boards before) is going to be tough. If you can follow this way of working, nothing like it. If you cannot here a simple plan -
Prepare for 3 months with all your stamina and give the CFA Level 1 (I know you would feel 3 months is not a lot of time, but that's the trick - the more time you give yourself the more relaxed your mind will become - see we engineers study the most only a night before the exam - Take this the same way). After the results you would know either of the three things -
You are a gem and you cracked it
You are almost there, if you had 3 more months, maybe you would have made it
You arent cut out for it (so move on)
This strategy is called in the start up world - Fail Fast Learn Fast - If you fail early it will help you lose stress over failure, help you contemplate if it is even worth another attempt or might just pump you enough to try harder.
