Cybercrimes can be categorized into two types: Active and Passive attacks. Active attacks are those attacks in which an attacker actively interferes with a system or network to modify, disrupt, or damage data and services. Meanwhile, passive attacks are those attacks in which an attacker secretly observes or intercepts the data without altering/changing it.
The goal is to just gather the information. If you want to explore in detail how active and passive attacks differ, refer to the Difference Between Active and Passive Attacks article.
