You should not limit your search to only Coimbatore but to entire India. Most of the institutes offer certificate & diploma courses in game design. Many of them are not even affiliated to any university. Look for colleges such as MIT, Pune, DSKIC Pune, Artemisia College of Art & Design, Indore (Govt. University), which offer 3-4 years duration in-depth degree courses in Game design. NID Ahemdabad offers Masters degree in Game Design. Do not confuse Game Design with Game programming. Game Design usually would mean the artistic, the creative part of developing a Game. Also remember that without learning 2D Animation, you can become a good game designer. You must develop very good sketching & painting skills also while completing your degree course.

In the video game industry, a game designer is a creative person who dreams up the overall design of a video game. In essence this means that designers are the people that create the initial framework for what will become the final product. Depending on the employer, designers may be further divided into even smaller groups, which work on only one particular aspect of the game. Whereas, a video game developer is a person or more often a group of people that convert the ideas and objectives of the design team into the actual game. In other words, their main job is to turn a vision into a reality. The developers entire job is to convert the sketches, layouts and storylines into a playable product. They accomplish this by writing tens or even hundreds of thousands of lines worth of computer code, which accurately represents what the designer had in mind.
