GCECT accepts candidates who graduated from 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics with a minimum mark of 45% (40% for reserved categories). Students enter GCECT through the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE) and proceed with counseling that selects students based on their obtained rankings. Those who wish to enter the second year through lateral admission need to pass the West Bengal Joint Entrance Lateral Entry Test (JELET).

The hostel fees at the Government College of Engineering and Ceramic Technology are very less, i.e, only around INR 60 per month. This fee includes the electricity charges. However, the student will need to pay separate charges for the mess. There are limited seats available at the hostel.
