Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Rohilkhand University (MJPRU) was established in 1975 as Rohilkhand University. It was renamed in 1997 to honor the social reformer Mahatma Jyotiba Phule. It got the status of a residential university in 1985, when four more departments were increased. The university is recognised by the UGC and accredited with a "B" Grade by the NAAC. The university has a campus of 206 acres in Bareilly. MJPRU is affiliated with 215 colleges.  The university has been ranked 34 under the Overall by the India Today 2024.

The university offers UG and PG courses across various specilisations such as Engineering, Management, Science, Arts, Medical, and others. MJPRU Bareilly conducts its entrance exam such as MJPRU Entrance Exam for admission to specific courses.
