Well dear, there are hundreds of Engineering Colleges in West Bengal whereas few for Medical. In 2009, the total number of Engineering seats were 20,077 and I think 5,000 were added again that year. However, last year counselling was gone upto 60,000. Even I have seen candidate with 59,000 rank getting good college like- IMPS College of Engineering, Malda. In 2010 Government has announced addition of 20,000 more seats which he has fulfilled. Simultaneously raising the number of Medical seats to 2,000 from 1200. But as far as we have seen last year councelling almost 40,000 Engineering seats were there whereas for Medical it was 1200 (approximately). In 2010 Government has announced to increase the number of Medical seats from 1200 to 2000 but as far as I concern there is no increase in seats till now. May be we can see those hike in 2011 councelling. One of the reason behind such few number of seats is there are very few Medical colleges in West Bengal there are 14 Medical Colleges including Dental out of which 5 are government. Yes, Civil Engineering is a good discipline to pursue. Civil Engineering can be said to be this big umbrella, under which may disciplines and areas of specializations are sheltered. For example, there is a sub branch that has been dedicated towards planning and construction of transportation means. Civil Engineering graduates GET opportunities in Government as well as Private sectors. Talking about Government sector, many enterprises such as ONGC, BHEL, IOC, PWD, Electricity boards, Town Planning department, NHAI, Armed Forces, Indian Railways etc. Requires qualified Civil Engineers. Salary scale is different in case of Private and Government sectors. But, the average starting salary is generally between 2-5 Lacs Rupees per year.

Best suitable course depends on your field of interest, if you have keen interest in analytical and computing skills than you may look for Computer Science. If you want to pursue career in robotics, AI and digital world than electronics is best option. Mechanical, civil and Electrical are known as ever green fields. Some of the niche areas are bio-technology, food technology, chemical engineering. These are also equally good, but opportunities are very few and selected. In all its your interest and where do you see yourself 5-10 years down the line.
