The disparity in the course duration of health courses offered by universities in Kerala and universities in other states is creating confusion for paramedical graduates from institutes outside Kerala. Even graduates from institutes like Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) and All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) are facing this issue.

The academic equivalency norms have bothered various job aspirants in Kerala. The allied health courses offered outside Kerala are three-and-a-half-year long, whereas, Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS) conducts the health courses of duration four years, reported The Hindu.

What problems do graduates face?

To pursue post-graduation or for placements in government hospitals in Kerala, the paramedical graduates from other states need to obtain equivalency certificates from KUHS.

According to Khaleel Mohammed, President of Allied Health Science Students and Professional Association India state, while a majority used to seek jobs abroad to repay their education loan dues, the door to such possibilities is shut. He said that these students are unable to find postings in government hospitals that pay around ₹ 15,000, many are now forced to be content with private hospitals that pay half that amount.”

KUHS Vice-Chancellor Mohanan Kunnummal said that the contents of the courses are dissimilar. “The Academic Council, which had deliberated the issue earlier, will take the matter up for discussion yet again,” he said.
