Maharashtra CM officially cancelled the final year/final semester examination of the non-professional courses as well as professional courses. Asked PM Modi to instruct apex regulatory bodies to endorse the decision of state governments.

Maharashtra Government officially cancelled the “final year/final semester examination of the non-professional courses as well as professional courses.”

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked him to instruct apex regulatory bodies All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), Council of Architecture (COA), Pharmacy Council of India (PCI), Bar Council of India (BCI), National Council of Teachers Education (NCTE) and National Council for Hotel Management and Catering Technology for professional programmes to “endorse the decision of state governments” and provide “necessary guidelines” regarding cancellation of major examinations.

Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray in his letter to PM Modi, said, “I request you to instruct above mentioned national level apex bodies to endorse the decision of the state government regarding cancellation of final year and final semester examinations of the professional courses and to issue necessary guidelines to the universities in this regard.”

While the state already decided to promote first-year and second-year students without conducting exams, Mr Thackeray said that the state decided to scrap final-year university exams considering the ongoing pandemic situation and conducting examination amid COVID-19 crisis “may prove to be an enormous task”. Mr Thackeray stated that he made a similar request regarding uniform guidelines on June 16 during the Chief Ministers’ web conference with PM Modi.

Meanwhile, some bodies already issued directions for the conduction of the exams. The University Grants Commission (UGC) released the examination guidelines and alternative academic calendars in May and they were endorsed by the AICTE. The Bar Council of India, too, released guidelines, cancelling exams for most students. However, this week, MHRD Mr Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank asked UGC to set up an expert panel to revise those examination guidelines.
