Established in 1953, Somaiya Trust runs 34 educational institutes in Mumbai offering higher education in various streams such as Management, Engineering, Education, Medicine, Humanities, Pure Sciences and Mass Communication. Over 39,000 students (including schools) are imparted education by more than 3,000 faculties and staff employed by the Trust.

In 2019, the Maharashtra Cabinet granted permission to the trust to set up a self-financing university. Following Cabinet's permission, it set up Somaiya Vidyavihar University, which started functioning independent of University of Mumbai, from 2019-2020 academic year. The university is jointly run by Somaiya Vidyavihar, KJ Somaiya Trust and The Somaiya Trust.
