The University Grants Commission (UGC) notified Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) that would help students build their degrees as per their choice. This is in line with the new National Education Policy.

According to the UGC notification, the Academic Bank of Credits shall be a national-level facility to promote flexibility of curriculum framework and interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary academic mobility of students across Higher Education Institutions in the country. “The regulations are meant to create appropriate credit transfer mechanism and shall facilitate students to choose their own learning path to attain a Degree or Diploma or Post Graduate diploma or academic qualification, working on the principle of multiple entry-multiple exit as well as any-time, any-where, and any-level learning,” the notification says.

“It will enable the integration of multiple disciplines of higher learning, leading to the desired learning outcomes including enhanced creativity, innovation, higher order thinking and critical analysis,” it adds.

What is ABC?

Academic Bank of Credit (ABC) is an academic service mechanism as a digital/virtual/online entity established to facilitate students to become its academic account holders. ABC will digitally store academic credits earned from recognised higher education institutions (HEIs) and allow for credit redemption in order to be awarded a certificate, diploma or degree.

How will ABC function?

ABC will function much like a commercial bank with students as account-holders to whom the bank provides services, including credit accumulation, credit transfer, credit redemption through the opening, closure and validation of accounts. Students who pursue education as freelancers can also accumulate credits. These credits can be deposited to student accounts. After the accumulation of credits, a student can redeem these in order to get any academic degree.
