Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has announced details of civil service exams for the year 2014. Unlike last year, when the preliminary exams for civil services were held in May, this year the exam will be held on August 24, 2014. The result for the exam is expected to be declared in the month of October.
UPSC has released a calendar regarding the examinations to be conducted by it in the year 2014 and as per this; the official notification for Civil Services Preliminary Exam 2014 is to be released on May 17, 2014.
UPSC conducts the civil services examination in two steps, that is, by conducting the civil services preliminary exam followed by the civil services mains exam. The preliminary examination is conducted as a screening test for the mains exam. This is an objective type exam which consists of two papers which are the general study paper and civil service aptitude test (CSAT). On the other hand the mains exam tends to assess the overall intellectual traits and depth of understanding of a candidate rather than merely testing the range of information and memory they possess. The civil services mains exam consists of nine written exams which are of 250 marks each.
