What is the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship

Erasmus Mundus is part of Erasmus+, the education programme of the European Union. It funds joint master's degrees. A joint master's degree is one course taught by many universities together, in more than one country. Students picked for these courses can get a full scholarship. It is a grant, not a loan. Nothing has to be paid back.

Who Funds the Erasmus Mundus Programme

The money comes from the European Union budget. The courses are run by groups of universities. Each group must have at least 3 universities from 3 different countries. At least 2 of them must be from the European Union or a country linked to the programme. The group handles admission, selection and the scholarship offer. Universities like Uppsala University and TU Delft work in these groups.

Erasmus Mundus Scholarship Eligibility Criteria

The basic rules come from the European Union. Each course then adds its own subject rules.

Academic Qualification Required

A student needs a bachelor's degree, or a degree treated as equal to it. Final year students can also apply. They must finish the degree before the master's course starts.

Nationality and Age Limit

Students from any country can apply. Indian students are fully eligible. There is no age limit in the official rules. One more rule keeps the class mixed. No single nationality can take more than 10 per cent of the scholarships given by one course.

English Language Requirement and IELTS

The European Union does not fix one language score. Each course decides what proof it wants. Some ask for an IELTS or TOEFL score. Others accept a letter saying the bachelor's degree was taught in English. Courses run by universities like University of Amsterdam print this rule on their own pages.

Who Cannot Apply for the Scholarship

A student who has already held an Erasmus Mundus scholarship cannot get it again. This holds true even if the old course was in another subject.

What the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship Covers

The monthly payment is one single amount. There is no extra travel payment or joining payment on top. The older version of this scholarship worked in a different way. So figures on unofficial websites are often wrong. Courses at Politecnico di Milano and Lund University follow the same rule.

Support for Students with Disabilities

Extra money is available for students who need it. It ranges from EUR 3,000 to EUR 60,000. This is separate from the monthly payment. The course applies for it on the student's behalf. Some courses also get extra scholarships kept aside for certain regions. Asia, which includes India, holds a fixed share of that budget.

Indian Institutions in the Catalogue

A few Indian institutions are on the list as partners. These are the University of Mumbai, Savitribai Phule Pune University, Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, the Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research and Rabindra Bharati University. Partner means they work with a group on teaching or research. It does not mean students apply for the scholarship there. All applications still go to the European group.

How to Apply for the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship

There is no common form. Follow these steps.

  1. Open the official Erasmus Mundus list on the EACEA website.

  2. Sort it by subject. Shortlist the courses that match your bachelor's degree.

  3. Visit each shortlisted course website. Read its entry rules, language rule and last date.

  4. Note every last date apart. Two courses in the same subject can close weeks apart.

  5. Get ready the documents that each course asks for.

  6. Fill the form on that course website and send it before its last date.

  7. Tick the scholarship box inside the form. Most courses use the same form for admission and for the scholarship.

  8. Wait for the result. The university group sends the offer, not the European Union.

Courses run by groups around Université Paris-Saclay follow this same route.

Documents Required for Erasmus Mundus

Each course puts up its own list. These items are asked for in most of them.

  • Bachelor's degree certificate, or a letter with the expected completion date

  • Mark sheets of all years

  • Proof of English, in the form that course accepts

  • Passport copy

  • Statement of purpose, also called a motivation letter

  • Letters of recommendation

  • Updated curriculum vitae

Check the final list on the course website before you upload anything.

Erasmus Mundus Selection Process and Mobility Rules

How Candidates Are Selected

The university group runs the selection. It reads the applications, puts the students in order of merit and picks who gets the scholarship. Marks matter, and so does the link between your bachelor's subject and the course. The group must also keep the nationality rule in mind while making the final list.

Mobility and the Degree Awarded

Study in two countries is a must, not a choice. A student has to complete at least 2 study periods in 2 different countries. Each period must be worth at least 30 ECTS credits. For short courses of 60 ECTS, each period must be worth 20 ECTS. Courses run for 12, 18 or 24 months. These are worth 60, 90 or 120 ECTS. At the end the student gets one joint degree, or separate degrees from the partner universities. KTH Royal Institute of Technology and Aarhus University award degrees this way.
