The scheme gives INR 12,000 a year to students of government, government-aided and local body schools whose family income is not more than INR 3.50 lakh a year. To get it, a student must first clear a state-level exam in Class 8. 

The money then continues from Class 9 to Class 12. That covers four full school years, which is often the stretch where a student decides whether to carry on studying at all. Many NMMS students go on to degree courses at places like Delhi University, Jamia Millia Islamia and Aligarh Muslim University. NMMS Scholarship 2026-27 Latest Updates

The Ministry of Education has extended the last date. You can now apply till September 30, 2026. The checking dates have changed too. Your school has to verify your form by October 15, 2026. The district office has to do its check by October 31, 2026. Do not ignore these two dates. A correct form can still get stuck if nobody checks it in time. Keep asking your school about it.

What is the National Means cum Merit Scholarship?

NMMS is a scholarship scheme of the Department of School Education and Literacy, under the Union Ministry of Education. Its aim is simple. A lot of children drop out after Class 8 because their families cannot afford secondary schooling. This scheme pays them to stay on. Every year one lakh fresh scholarships go to Class 9 students who clear the qualifying exam held by their own State or UT government. The scholarship then runs on renewal mode up to Class 12.

NMMS Scholarship Eligibility Criteria 2026-27

Eligibility has three parts. Your marks, your family income, and the kind of school you study in. All three have to match.

Academic Eligibility for the NMMS Scholarship

A student must have at least 55 per cent marks, or an equivalent grade, in the Class 7 examination to sit for the selection test. SC and ST students get a 5 per cent relaxation here. The test itself is taken while the student is in Class 8. The scholarship money begins in Class 9.

NMMS Income Limit and School Type

Total parental income from all sources must not be more than INR 3.50 lakh a year. You will need an income certificate from a competent authority to prove this. On schools, the rule is narrow. Only students of State Government, government-aided and local body schools qualify.

NMMS Scholarship Amount and Benefits

A selected student gets INR 12,000 a year. That works out to INR 1,000 a month. If the scholarship runs its full course from Class 9 to Class 12, the student receives INR 48,000 over four years. The money goes straight into the student’s bank account by Direct Benefit Transfer, routed through the Public Financial Management System. No school or middleman handles it.

There is no restriction on how the amount is spent. Most families use it for books, uniforms, travel and coaching. Four years of steady support also makes it easier to plan for what comes after school, whether that is a degree at Banaras Hindu University, the University of Calcutta or Anna University, or a diploma course closer to home.

NMMS Selection Process and Exam Pattern

Selection happens through a written exam held by the State or UT. There is no national paper. Your own SCERT sets it, conducts it and declares the result. The exam has two papers, and you have to clear both.

NMMS Qualifying Marks and Merit List

You must pass both papers with at least 40 per cent marks in aggregate, counting MAT and SAT together. For SC and ST students that cut-off is 32 per cent.

Clearing the cut-off does not settle it. Each State has a fixed quota of scholarships, so the final merit list depends on how you rank against others in your State. Reservation rules of your State apply to that list. Students who clear this stage are the ones who then move to the NSP application. Competitive selection of this kind is something they will meet again later, at Jadavpur University, Savitribai Phule Pune University or the University of Hyderabad.

How to Apply for NMMS Scholarship on NSP

Applying is a two-part job. First you create a One Time Registration number. Then you fill the scholarship form using it.

NMMS OTR Registration on the National Scholarship Portal

OTR is compulsory for 2026-27. Without it you cannot reach the application form.

• Go to scholarships.gov.in.

• Open the One Time Registration option.

• Enter your Aadhaar details and mobile number.

• Complete the Aadhaar-based authentication.

• Note down the OTR number and password that the portal generates.

Your OTR stays with you for your whole academic life. You do not make a new one every year, and renewal students must not create a second one.

Filling the NMMS Application Form

Once your OTR is ready, the form takes about fifteen minutes.

• Log in to the NSP using your OTR number and password.

• Pick the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme from the scheme list.

• Fill in your personal, academic and bank account details.

• Upload the scanned documents.

• Save the form as a draft and read every field once more.

• Submit it. Download the confirmation page and keep a printout.

Check your details twice before the final submit. Editing after submission is not allowed.

NMMS Scholarship Payment Not Received

If both verifications are done but no money has come in, the problem is almost always with the bank account. The commonest cause is that the account is not linked to your Aadhaar. Visit your bank branch and ask them to complete Aadhaar seeding.

If the account details are fine and the amount is still missing, contact your Institute Nodal Officer first, then the NSP helpdesk. Students at Panjab University, Kurukshetra University and Guru Nanak Dev University face the same kind of bank-linking snag with their own scholarships, so the fix is a familiar one.

NMMS Scholarship Renewal for Class 10, 11 and 12

The scholarship is not given once and forgotten. You apply again every year on the NSP, using the same OTR.

Renewal has academic conditions attached. You have to be promoted to the next class in the first attempt. For the scholarship to carry on into Class 11 and 12, you need at least 60 per cent marks in the Class 10 board exam, with a 5 per cent relaxation for SC and ST students.

You also have to stay in a government or government-aided school. Moving to a private school ends the scholarship.
