• Competitive-wise Tier 1 NITs for CSE: In the Tier 1 NIT colleges in India, the B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering programme has always been highly competitive. In 2026, the JEE Main closing ranks in the General All India category for the NITs in Trichy, Surathkal, and Warangal were 1,451, 2,265, and 4,318 respectively. For the same All India category and CSE specialisation, NIT Rourkela and NIT Calicut had closing ranks of 4,508 and 6999. 

• Placement-wise Tier 1 NITs for all B.Tech Programmes: The Tier 1 NITs match and go above the immediate corporate placement rates of the top IITs in Madras and Delhi. Based on NIRF reports submitted by the IITs and NITs for the 2023-24 academic year, NIT Calicut had the highest placement rate of 88.58% for engineering graduates, among the other NITs. Rourkela’s NIT for the same timeline had an 81.21% placement rate. The elite NITs in Trichy and Surathkal had a placement rate of 76.87% and 76.67%,  respectively. If you compare, IIT Madras’s B.Tech placements in the 2023-24 academic year show a similar (marginally higher) placement rate of 76.89%.

Which is the Best Tier 1 NIT College in India for Computer Science Engineering?

The Tier 1 NITs match or exceed the median packages and placement rates offered at the newer IITs in India. 

But based on JEE Main closing ranks sourced by Shiksha experts and placement information officially published by these Tier 1 NITs, it can be established that Computer Science Engineering remains the most competitive. 

1. NITT - According to its official site, NIT Tiruchirappalli had the highest placement rate for CSE graduates among other B.Tech specialisations for the batch of 2024-25, at 88.1%. This was followed by Electrical and Electronics Engineering at 75.7%.

2. NITK - NIT Surathkal in Karnataka mentions in its official placement report dated 2022-23 that Computer Science Engineering graduates earned a median package of INR 28+ LPA. This was the highest among all other specialisations. 
3. NITW  - Warangal's NIT has published its 2026 placement report, where CSE graduates saw a 99.15% placement rate, with a median package of INR 24.4 LPA. This was the highest among all other specialisations. 
4. NIT Rourkela - In 2024-25 session, the batch of 128 CSE students got 144 job offers, which was the highest among other B.Tech specialisation batches.
5. NIT Calicut - For the 2024-25 year, the median package for CSE graduates from NITC was INR 16+ LPA.
