Those who are willing to get admission to this course, must qualify for an entrance exam. The institute has an in-house entrance exam namely, IIAD Design Aptitude Test (IDAT), which is conducted by IIAD for the selection of candidates in its UG courses from the Designing stream. It is a mandatory step to qualify for the entrance exam with a valid score. 

Candidates who have passed Class 12 or an equivalent exam in any discipline (Science, Humanities, or Arts) are eligible for admission. Indian Institute of Art and Design conducts iMAT or IIAD Management Aptitude Test for admission to BBA and MBA programmes. Candidates need to pass iDAT for admission to BDes & MDes courses. Hence, aspirants cannot get admission without passing the entrance test.
