AI is tremendously changing the design industry and in this fast-changing world, it is very important for candidates to develop certain skills that are almost necessary for survival and growth. Design is no longer about only creativity and sketching. Now a design student is expected to have skills like strong observation, good communication skills and presentation skills. These skills are required everywhere to get into new programmes, jobs, to clear an interview, to present a portfolio, etc.

In 2026, institutes and employers are looking for people who can combine communication skills, critical thinking, logical ability, etc. They must also have digital skills and must have knowledge of the workings of Artificial Intelligence and design software and tools. These skills are required in all the industries related to design, like the fashion industry, leather industry, graphic design, etc.

Skills Every Design Student Must Develop

1. Creative Thinking: This is one of the most important skills for a design student. It is a natural skill, but it can be polished. Design students must think creatively. They must bring original ideas, explore art and architecture, and participate in various design challenges.
2. Sketching and Visualisation: Sketching skills never get old. This has to be developed and polished. Students should regularly practice sketching, especially perspective drawing, human figures, shapes, layouts, etc. Sketching helps to express ideas in a better way.
3. Design Thinking: Every design student must think in this way. It is a way of providing solutions through design. It includes developing problem-solving skills and helps to create solutions.
4. Digital Skills: In this world, design students must have good knowledge of software and tools that are used in the industry. This will help in preparing them for better opportunities. Some of the software are Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, Figma, etc.
5. Attention to Detail: Design students must develop this skill of giving attention to the tiniest thing present in a textile, sketch, product, painting, etc. It will help them in determining the quality of design and the needs of the customer or examiner. 
6. Communication Skills: One of the main tasks of a designer is to present the artwork to different clients and parties. So a design student must develop good communication skills so that they can help them later. They should focus on public speaking, storytelling, writing, etc.
7. Observation Skills: Design students must learn the art of observing everything because anything can be an inspiration for the next artwork. Visit galleries, museums, parks, libraries and observe the art, architecture, and furniture there.
8. Research Skills: For creating something best and unique, a lot of research is needed. So a design student, from the very beginning onwards, develop the reseach skills. He should read daily, analyse competitors, collect visual references, etc.
9. Portfolio Development: This skill must be developed by all design students. They must know how to showcase their abilities and work. A portfolio must include sketches, case studies, internship work and details, etc.
10. Presentation Skills: A design student should have very good presentation skills. He should depict his ideas, innovations, and work with proper presentation. People should be able to understand his work through his presentation style.
11. Adaptability and Continuous Learning: Design is an industry that changes very fast. Every day there is a new development. So a design student must be adaptable and should learn about new developments continuously.
12. AI Literacy: In this world, where AI is capturing every industry, we should learn how to use it efficiently instead of abandoning it. Learn how to make tables, analyse data, and give prompts to AI. It can help in research work and brainstorming. Some AI tools are ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Canva AI, Figma AI, etc.
13. Business and Marketing Knowledge: Learn basic business and marketing skills. This will help in freelancing or starting a new business. Learn about pricing, social media relationships, client management, etc.
14. Problem Solving Skills: The job of a designer is not only to create designs but to provide solutions with the help of your designs. Students should read case studies, analyse the problem, get feedback, and then choose the correct solution.
