Design as a career option
Apple founder Steve Jobs proved that a good design that is easy-to-use can make products more desirable and commercially viable. Simplistic, functional and futuristic designs of Apple Ipod and Iphone made them instant hits in the market worldwide.
Mr. Arun Balakrishnan from Design Institute of India (DII), Indore explains, "Design is a continuous process of mind-to-hand, through which one explores, improves and develops multidimensional aesthetics, functional and technical aspects. It can translate any idea into something that is useful - be it graphics, buildings, or apparels."
While the job markets are flooded with engineers and management graduates, industries in India are still facing severe talent crunch in the design area. Students need to undergo a holistic development process inside and outside the classroom and know skills needed in the marketplace to become a complete design professional.
"Knowledge or Gyaan, Kriya or Action, Srijan or Creation, and Sanyojan or Composition of different elements - are four important pillars of a design process. Hence, we make sure that all our students are well-versed in all these four aspects", says Arun.
