Established in 1986 as a “non-profit project of The Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council, sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India”, Indian Institute of Gems and Jewellery was under the supervision of the German Design and Manufacturing Experts till 2010.

Indian Institute of Gems and Jewellery (IIGJ) has four other campuses, and these are – IIGJ Andheri, IIGJ Tardeo (in Mumbai), New Delhi and IIGJ, Jaipur. This Jewellery Design college also has two sister organisations under The GJEPC, which are: Gem Testing Laboratory, Jaipur/ Indian Diamond Institute, Surat.

Aspirants can secure admission in the Jewellery Design Foundation/Gemology Course if they have cleared their 10+2 from an English medium school.

Courses offered at IIGJ include Jewellery Design Foundation Course, Industry Oriented Design, Computer Aided Design/Rhino, Styles of Jewellery Design, Jewellery Design Diploma, Jewellery Technology Diploma- Basic, Jewellery Technology Diploma- Advance, Jewellery Technology Diploma, Diamonds and Diamond Grading, Coloured Gemstone Identification and Diploma in Gemology.

2. Gemological Institute of India

Location: Mumbai

Established in 1971 as a non-profit public charitable trust, Gemmological Institute of India (GII) was set up under the aegis of the Gem & Jewellery Exporters’ Association, Mumbai.

GII was the brainchild of gem traders of Mumbai – Shri Kirtilal K. Doshi, Late Shri Himmatbhai C. Jhaveri, Shri Rajendrakumar A. Shah, Shri Pravin M. Nanavati and Shri Padmakant H. Jhaveri.

The official website of GII informs that, “GII is an Allied Teaching Centre (ATC) for the FGA (London) examinations in India. Institute has been recognised centre for the London-based Fellowship (FGA) examinations of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain in India since its inception”.

Courses offered at GII:  Diploma in Diamond Grading, Diploma in Jewellery Designing, Diploma in Gemmology (Gemmology Correspondence Course), Short Term Certificate Course in Gem Identification, Polished Diamond Grading, Rough Diamond Assortment and Gemmology Course.

3. Indian Institute of Jewellery

Location: Mumbai

Offering education in spheres like Jewellery Manufacturing, Gemmology, Design, CAD, Jewellery Retail and Business, Indian Institute of Jewellery (IIJ) was established in 2004. At the time of its inception, IIJ offered only one course, which was the Master Creator - Jewellery Manufacturing Programme.

IIJ is a technical collaborator of two programmes which are – Post Graduate Diploma in Jewellery Management (PGDJM) and Diploma in Jewellery Design Management (DJDM). IIJ offers these programmes with the Garware Institute of Career and Education Development (GICED), University of Mumbai. The course curriculum, faculty, training as well as infrastructure facilities for these two programmes are offered by IIJ.

Established in 1993, Pearl Academy of Fashion started offering BA (Hons) in Jewellery Design in 2005. The first campus of Pearl Academy was set up in South Delhi’s Okhla area, however, the college was thereafter shifted to Naraina in West Delhi.
