A public university in the United States has launched full scholarships for two talented, underprivileged Indians to pursue bachelor's programmes starting September 2011.

The University of Cincinnati's UC Global Opportunity Scholarship would include full tuition, housing, meals and airfare costs for the students enrolling at its College of Engineering and Applied Science.

The scholarships would be offered once every four years, after the two awardees graduate.

The University of Cincinnati (UC) has partnered with US-based non-governmental organisation Lend-A-Hand India (LAHI) to identify two candidates from its partner schools. LAHI has more than 60 partner schools in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Goa, with plans to launch in Haryana and Gujarat in 2011.

While LAHI will assist UC in finding suitable students, the university is going to make the decision on the scholarship, said Jonathan Weller, director of international admissions, UC.

Assuming that the students wouldn't have taken their SATs, whose scores are needed for entry into US colleges, Weller said, "We are going to modify our requirements for these two students based on the ground realities."

"The university is also creating a fund so people can donate for the Global Opportunity Scholarships," Weller said, adding the money raised could be given to cover things not done currently, such as winter clothing. The scholarships may be expanded. "Our hope is that we'll be able to increase the number of the Global Opportunity scholarships and add other countries," he said.

In addition to the new scholarships, UC is offering 10 half-tuition scholarships for all majors at the university - from engineering to social sciences. This award ranges from $2,000 to $12,000 a year. The annual tuition for UC's undergraduate programmes on its main campus is about $24,000.

Applicants may apply for these online by December 1, 2010.

In all, the university is providing $1 million in scholarships. It is part of UC's efforts to fulfil its social responsibility, said Weller.

Of its 2,000 international students, about 650 are Indian, the largest group among all them.
