AIEEE and IIT JEE to be merged altogether in one single common entrance test.

After having many conflicts, finally the IITs have given nod to ministry's decision to have a common entrance test for all engineering colleges in the country.

The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) will soon have a meeting with the council of Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) to put a final stamp on the decision to merge the IIT-Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) and All India Engineering Entrance Exam (AIEEE).

IITs have agreed to this decision after the agreement that numerous elements of IIT-JEE will be part of the all new common entrance examination. A formal meeting of the council will be conducted in February to put a final stamp on the merger. The new entrance examination will have numerous elements of IIT-JEE so as to ensure that only best brains join the IITs.

A presentation on features of the new common entrance examination has been made by IIT Kanpur director Sanjay Dande and it covers evaluating the skills of a student. From now on, a student's class 12th marks and entrance exam score will have equal weightage. (Read more...)

A joint committee of IIT and Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will conduct this exam. It will also cover all central government engineering colleges and those in seven states such as Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and West Bengal, which had decided to enroll students on the basis of the AIEEE score.

At present, there are 15 Indian institute of technology, four Indian Institutes of Information Technology and 20 National Institutes of Technology in the country. Every year, more than 15 lakh students, including 4.85 lakh for IIT JEE, appear for various engineering entrance tests in the country. The HRD ministry firmly believes that more states could join the league in future and it will try to bring them on board at a meeting of state education ministers on February 15.
