Electrical Engineering: Favorite Stream at IITs

Replacing Information Technology, electrical engineering has emerged as the most popular engineering streams among successful students in the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) Joint Entrance Examination (JEE).

An IIT faculty member said, "Telecommunications is at an equal position as computer science. And now, electrical engineering is at par with computer science. After that, most students opt for Mechanical Engineering."

Though computer science is still one of the most preferred engineering streams among IIT-JEE toppers in 2010, approximately 25 percent of the top 100 rankers have opted for electrical engineering. The gradually fading appeal of the IT sector can be considered as one of the prime reason for this major shift in technical education.

In 2010, electrical engineering opened at All India Rank (AIR) 1 and closed at rank 98, while computer science closed at rank 116.
