The phase-1 of IIT Bombay’s campus placement from December 1 to 19, 2013 saw participation from almost 260 companies. In an unprecedented show of confidence in our students, recruiters have already made around 900 offers.

The companies continue to be enthusiastic about hiring IIT Bombay students inspite of global economic uncertainties. The phase-1 of IIT Bombay’s campus placement from December 1 to 19, 2013 saw participation from almost 260 companies. In an unprecedented show of confidence in IIT-B students, recruiters have already made around 900 offers.

Approximately 1600 students graduating from various academic programmes (B.Tech, Dual Degree, M.Tech. M.Sc., M.Des., M.Phil. and PhD) participated in the campus placement.

Simultaneously, the final year students were given opportunities to hone their soft skills and refine their technical skills through various training programmes and workshops. The phase-2 of company placement is from January to June 2014.

Day-1

The ‘Day-1’ of campus placement saw 37 firms participating in the process, while about 400 students from all academic programmes of the institute competed for some of the most coveted jobs in industries related to engineering, technology, IT/software/hardware, consulting, research & development, finance, analytics, FMCG, services etc. A total of 182 students were placed on Day-1.

Student inclination towards engineering & technology jobs

Students continued to show inclination towards the technical sector with larger number of students wanting to opt for engineering and technology firms including information technology. A large proportion of students have shown their preference for such job opportunities, which can be primarily attributed to attractive work profiles offered to IIT graduates by these firms. More than two-thirds of the students opted for science, engineering and technology-oriented jobs, with the recruiting companies operating in various sectors of the economy.

Continued prominence of IIT Bombay in Management Consulting, Financial Services and Analytics Sectors

Over 70 offers have been extended by over 20 management consulting firms, over 70 offers by 17 financial services firms and over 80 offers by 25 analytics firms. With many of the top global companies of these sectors preferring IITB students, these sectors saw a rush among the top-level as well as the mid-level companies to recruit the brightest and the best from the campus. A variety of profiles were opened up in these sectors.

Research & Development in the forefront

IITB saw an increase in organisations hiring fresh graduates in the R&D sector. This sector had been steadily growing for the past few years and this year IITB saw some premier job offers in this sector. A total of 13 R&D organisations offered 35 positions in phase-1. Few more are expected to recruit during phase-2.

Educating the future generations

IITB has continued to provide faculty to several educational institutions through campus placement. 23 students, including few with doctoral degree, have been offered jobs with educational institutions through campus placement. Seven more educational institutes/universities have confirmed to recruit during phase-2.

Increased access to international companies

Over 100 students have been recruited by multinational companies for their global requirement. Reputed organisations from Europe, Japan, Korea, Middle East, Singapore, Taiwan, USA etc. visited IIT Bombay. Many new foreign companies also recruited in phase-1. Also, many foreign companies recruited for their Indian operations.

Diverse recruiters

The initial part of the season had variety of firms from sectors like engineering, technology, IT/software/hardware, consulting, research & development, analytics, finance, FMCG, services etc. During phase-2 also, companies from diverse sectors are expected to recruit from the campus.

Conclusion

The successful student placement in phase-1 of 2013-2014 clearly demonstrated the demand of IIT-B graduates among the top recruiters in various segments of the economy.

In addition to the 260 companies who have already participated in placement, around 100 more companies are likely to participate in campus placement in the following months.

Some of the registered students will be going for higher studies or have different plans and may not have participated actively in the campus placement process.
