IIT-Bombay’s new centre to offer Ph.D. in Urban Sc. & Engineering

The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-B) now has a brand new Centre for Urban Science and Engineering (C-USE) at its campus. This center aims to combine science and technology with sustainable and human-friendly design to create innovative and holistic solutions towards improving the life of the fast urbanizing population in the developing world.  

Key highlights of C-USE:

  • The centre would promote research
  • provide education required for preparing future mangers of cities
  • offer training programmes to those already in jobs, in the related domains

C-USE is a member of the New York based international consortium called Centre for Urban Science and Progress (CUSP), and is also interlinked to many departments, Centers and groups at IIT Bombay. It is also a part of MAGEEP (McDonnell Academy Global Energy and Environment Partnership) – a consortium of 28 universities and corporate partners working together in Energy, Environmental and Sustainability research, education and operations.

Ph.D. in Urban Science & Engineering

Commencing January 2014, the center aims to start a PhD program christened - Ph.D. in Urban Science & Engineering.

Eligibility for admission:

  • First Class or 60% marks (55% marks for SC/ST) for admission in:

(i) Undergraduate and Master’s degree in any of the Engineering Disciplines (Civil, Electrical, Computer Science, Mechanical, etc.) 

OR

(ii) Architecture, Urban Planning and other related disciplines.

Students will also have to take a screening exam as part of the selection process for the program.

Course structure:

Ph.D. students will be engaged in interdisciplinary research that will focus on urban challenges of megacities. They  will work  with  faculty  and  researchers  from  various  departments  and centres at IIT Bombay in the following domains, including but not limited to:

  • Planning and Design: Housing, Land use policies, Public Spaces, Risk Management
  • Policy and Governance: Housing Economics, Health (Diagnostics, Awareness), Education Employment,Environment
  • Infrastructure :Transportation and Land use, Urban water, Waste Management, Smart Energy buildings
  • Informatics : Citizen Science, Urban Knowledge Banks, Geo­Spatial  Technologies

Important dates:

  • The date for written test and or interview:  December 7, 2013

The center is also working towards developing a postgraduate program in consultation with urban experts around the world. These courses will cover urban domains such as transportation, land use, urban design, water, food, public health, urban informatics and governance, among others.
