In a one of its kind invention, the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee (IIT-R) has come up with a technological solution to 3D virtual mapping by using photogrammetry for the first time in India. Photogrammetry is the science of making measurements from photographs. It is of two types – Close range and Aerial photogrammetry. In the latter case, a camera is mounted on an aircraft to take images of location/ground.

The solution can serve as a useful cost-effective and efficient alternative to the expensive laser technology used for virtual mapping of any location or structure.

The sample work titled as '3D model IIT civil org' has been uploaded by the institute on YouTube. The aim behind uploading the 3D model of the department of civil engineering and its surroundings is to get feedback from industry and general public. The work covers every tiny detail of complete premises of civil engineering department and its surroundings as it appears from outside, as well as its aerial view from above the ground.

The technology is said to be able to accurately determine the exact area of a site and structure and is therefore expected to assist civil administration authorities to identify the existing illegal encroachments on roads, in markets or other places in an effective way.

Kamal Jain, expert of digital photogrammetry and an associate professor in the civil engineering department informed media that they have developed calibrated cameras instead of laser sensors, using photogrammetry methods that present an excellent photo-realistic visual experience. He added that such a cost effective technological solution has been developed for the first time in the country and is much better than any laser technology, reported Hindustan Times. This technology is made available in either 'ready to sell mode' or by way of consultancy.
