IITian commits suicide at IIT-M
A second year student of Indian Institute of technology-Madras, Kuldeep Yadav, hanged himself from the ceiling fan allegedly due to problems in personal relationships.
The investigation officer said that he spoke to his friend at 8.56am and dialed the same number at 9.27am but the call was unanswered. The time of incident is believed to be some where in between 9.27am and 9.42 am.
The incident took place in a room at the ground floor of the Narmada hostel at IIT-M, and was first noticed by Kuldeep's wing-mate. After which he and his friends broke open the door and lowered the body. The boy was still alive struggling to breathe and was immediately rushed to the IIT hospital around 10 am. After which he was later transferred to the Fortis Malar hospital in Adyar. Kuldeep couldn't survive and died around 2:20 p.m in ICU. One of the students said that the doctors informed them that there was a chance, since his pulse revived but will be kept under observation for six hours. The body was later shifted to the Government Royapettah Hospital from where it was taken to the Kilpauk Medical College.
The Kotturpuram later registered a suicide case and informed the boy's father, Yasodhar Singh. The teachers said that he was a good student and was a regular student who used to be silent but always submitted completed assignments in time. The faculty members are however concerned about the mental conditions of the student and looking forward to better mentoring.
The rise in the number of suicide cases is quite alarming. Apart from pressure of studies, students are also caught in a vicious circle of peer pressure and relationship issues. To ensure students are well taken care of, a round the clock counseling unit with a tele-counselling facility has been set up. Read More...
