IITians opting for international internships
International exposure has been sought after for the last few years but recently, there has been a sharp rise in the number of IITians who have opted for internships abroad. Most of these internships were in the US, Canada, Australia, Japan, Portugal, UK, France and South-East Asia.
IIT Bombay made conscious efforts to get more international internships, which have doubled since last year. At IIT Delhi too, the number of students opting for internships abroad has risen by 20% in the last two years. Most of these students look to intern at universities, research centres, and companies – which are mostly paid internships. At IIT Kharagpur, there has been a 10% rise in students interning abroad – 80% in academic pursuits, and 20% in the corporate world.
Usually, a stipend can range anywhere between Rs 20,000-60,000 per month and in some cases, even more, for both Indian and international internships. The stipend is expected to cover boarding, food and travel expenses for students.
