IITs To Offer Courses in Medicine
The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are soon planning to offer courses in medicine. Mr. Kapil Sibal, Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister, said, "The decisions were taken to bring IITs at par with the international institutes and to make them global in every sense. It was in principle agreed that IITs will have foreign students as well as faculties." A quota of 25 per cent seats in post graduate courses would be reserved for foreign students; however, the number of Indian students in IITs will not be affected by this. Also, there exist certain issues associated with introduction of amendments to the Indian Citizenship Act, which need to be looked into.
The decision of introduction of medical courses in IITs has been taken since medicine also entails a considerable number of engineering techniques. Mr. Sibal also clarified that the MCI consent would be required for awarding medical degrees, not for research in medical-allied fields.
