JEE Advanced 2015 AIR 3 Topper Mukesh Pareek credits his success to friends & family
JEE Advanced 2015 AIR 3 Topper Mukesh Pareek is a resident of Indore, Madhya Pradesh. He believes that the success that he has achieved in the exam was not possible if only his family and friends were not there to back him up.

Talking about his preparation stage, he says, “In the two years on my preparation, I did not cut out from my friends. I used to go out and hang around with them. We watched a lot of movies too. Infact, this way, I used to be relaxed and concentrate on my studies too”.
In an interview with shiksha.com, Mukesh talks more about his success mantra, preparation strategies and future plans. Read the excerpts from the interview below.
Q. Congrats on your achievement. So, how do you feel being the AIR 3 Topper of JEE Advanced 2015?
A. It’s a very good feeling. After I gave my exam and once JEE Advanced 2015 answer keys were released, I thought and expected to be in the list of top 10 rank holders. But, emerging as the AIR 3 was never expected.
I am really happy. Happy for my parents, my teachers and my mentors. It’s a very proud moment for me.
Q. Did you expect to be one of the toppers of the exam?
A. No. I never expected to be one of the toppers. I thought that I would somewhere near the top 10 toppers but being in the top 3 was something I never dreamt of.
Q. What is your overall score?
A. My score was 449/504. My subject wise marks were:
- Physics – 161/168
- Chemistry – 142/168
- Maths – 146/168
Q. How long have you been preparing? And what was your study plan like for JEE Advanced 2015?
A. For JEE and IITs, I started preparing from Std. 11th. However, I started taking competitive exams right from Std.8th. When I was in 8th, I cleared NTSE, which was my first ever big examination. It gave me a lot of confidence. Though, I couldn’t clear the second level of NTSE back then.
I gave a try at NTSE again in Std 10th and I cleared all the levels of the exam that year. Then in 11th, I started preparing for JEE.
Study Plan:
I took coaching classes from Catalyzer institute, Indore. In 11th, I focused on Physics and Mathematics much more. In the end, four months before the exam, I realised that I was rally weak in chemistry. My results totally changed. So, from there, I devoted 90% of my time to Chemistry. Towards the end, I became quite confident in chemistry. I used to study around 10 hours a day.
Q. What was your score in JEE Main 2015? What was XII board marks?
A. In JEE Main, I got 325 out of 360. In 12th boards, I secured 94% marks.
Q. Have you taken any other exam?
A. I have not taken any other exam because my one and only aim was to get into IIT Bombay. So, that’s why I didn’t appear for any other engineering entrance exam.
Q. Which IIT are you aiming at and which stream do you wish to pursue?
A. I want to get into IIT Bombay to pursue CSE.
Q. Any tips for aspirants who would be taking the exam next year?
A. The main key factor that I think helped me score was that I studied consistently and worked hard for two years. These years were really important for my preparation.
In 11TH, everything starts with an excitement. So, I would suggest all my juniors to maintain this excitement level till the last day of the examination. I did the same.
You know, I have friends who became restless during the last days of the exam and started studying less. That doesn’t help. I maintained my efficiency till the last day of the exam. I think, it’s all about working hard, being consistent and motivated.
Q. Tell us about your family background?
A. I live in Indore in a joint family. Basically, we are from Rajasthan. My father is a businessman He has a transport business in Indore only. My mother is a home-maker. I have an elder brother who is studying CA.
I have a cousin who is studying B.E from IET DAV, Indore. He used to teach me till 10th. He is my inspiration. Another cousin of mine, who is an engineer too, inspired me a lot. I got full support from my family.
Q. Any future plans?
A. See, my first and main aim was to get into IITs which I have cleared now. Once I get there and based on the exposure, knowledge and information I get there, I would decide what I want to do in future.
However, I like Mathematics. So, I just might get into research. This is one thing I would like to do.
