JEE Main 2014: Important topics in Physics, Chemistry and Maths!

JEE is a benchmark for budding engineers to gain admission to India's premier technology institutes - the IITs. In today’s competitive era, intelligence and hard work are not sufficient for qualifying the prestigious exams like the JEE. One needs to be smart enough to plan out the preparation in such a way that with less efforts he is able to get through the JEE.

With lakhs of students taking the JEE, one needs to adopt a real smart strategy in order to excel in the prestigious exam. Round the clock studying in a haphazard manner can actually land you into trouble. You need to chalk out everything in advance so as to avoid any kind of risks. A meticulous planning from the very beginning ensures that the syllabus is covered within the prescribed time limit so that you are not compelled to opt for shortcuts like selective studies.

First of all get acquainted with the IIT JEE syllabus. Knowing the syllabus does not mean just seeing the topics; instead review all the topics thoroughly. Though, you need to cover all the topics, but you can still identify the ones which generally fetch more questions in JEE by referring the IIT JEE Past year papers.

We shall consider all three subjects Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry one by one and discuss the important topics of each:

  • Mathematics

We proceed with mathematics. The topic-wise division of the questions asked in JEE Main-2013 is tabulated below:

S. No.

Topic

Number of questions asked in JEE Main 2013

1.

Coordinate Geometry

7

2.

Limits, Continuity and Differentiability

3

3.

Complex Numbers and Quadratic Equations

3

4.

Integral Calculus

3

5.

Sequences and Series

2

6.

Trigonometry

2

The table clearly shows that Coordinate Geometry is the most important topic of the mathematics syllabus. Around 7 questions were asked from this topic in JEE Main 2013. This shows that excelling in coordinate geometry is a must. Though it is not necessary that the topic would again fetch the same number of questions but it is undoubtedly the most important topic of IIT JEE Mathematics. The topic was followed by some topics of algebra including Limits, Continuity and Differentiability, Complex Numbers and Quadratic Equations which fetched 3 questions each in JEE 2013.

This table throws some light on the importance of topics. Higher the number of questions asked from a particular topic, the more important it is. Some of the vital books which are generally referred for the preparation of JEE include:

Author/ Publisher

Name of Book

R.D. Sharma

Maths X1 and X11

S.L. Loney

Trigonometry and Co-ordinate Geometry

Arihant

Algebra, Differential calculus and Integral Calculus

Hall Knight

Higher Algebra

These books are extremely useful for those eyeing the JEE Main 2014 as they contain numerous solved and unsolved examples. Solutions to the problems in the Higher Algebra by Hall and Knight are arranged in a systematic manner with step-by-step explanations, making them easier to understand.

  • Physics

The topic-wise break-up of questions asked in JEE is as follows:

S. No.

Topic

Number of questions asked in JEE Main 2013

1.

Current Electricity

8

2.

Electrostatics

4

3.

Optics

3

4.

Laws of Motion

2

5.

Simple Harmonic Motion

2

6.

Waves

2

7.

Heat and Thermodynamics

2

Current electricity is the most important topic of IIT JEE Physics. It always fetches a good amount of questions. In 2013, 8 questions were asked from this topic. Electrostatics is also an important topic which easily draws 4-5 questions. Various other heads which are equally significant include Laws of Motion, Simple Harmonic Motion, Waves, Heat and Thermodynamics. JEE aspirants must focus primarily on these topics so as to secure their position in the prestigious exam. Some books which are usually referred for the preparation of Physics topics include:

Author/Publisher

Name of Book

H.C.Verma

Concepts of Physics Vol I and II

I.E. Irodov

Problems in General Physics

Halliday, Resnick & Walker

Fundamentals of Physics

Krotov

Aptitude Test Problems in Physics

Nelkon and Parker

Advance Physics

S.L. Loney

Elements of Dynamics Part I & II

These books are specifically tailored for the students of class 12. Books like H.C.Verma are all-inclusive which cover all the topics with sufficient details. Numerical exercises given at the end of chapters have been specially designed to aid the understanding of concepts. Irodov, Loney and Halliday are some other useful books.

  • Chemistry

Chemistry is generally considered to be a tough subject because it involves cramming of chemical reactions and formulae. The following table demonstrates the number of questions asked in the JEE Main 2013 from various sections:

S. No.

Topic

Number of questions asked in JEE Main 2013

1.

Periodic Table and Representative Elements

3

2.

Transition Element and Coordination Chemistry

3

3.

Gaseous State

2

4.

Atomic structure

2

5.

Solution and Colligative Properties

2

6.

General Organic Chemistry

2

7.

Hydrocarbons

1

8.

Amines

2

9.

Carboxylic Acids and Derivatives

1

10.

Carbohydrate, Amino Acids and Polymer

1

Periodic Table is the simplest and the most scoring topic. Three questions were asked from this topic in JEE Main 2013. The topic of transition element and coordination chemistry is also equally important. JEE takers are advised to focus on these two areas. Other areas which also demand equal attention include gaseous state, atomic structure, solution and colligative properties etc. Though, in the year 2013 just 1 question was asked from each of the sections hydrocarbons, carboxylic acids and derivatives and carbohydrate, amino acids and polymer, but these sections are also important. If you consult the IIT JEE papers of previous years you will get to know that even these topics fetch several questions.

Some of the notable chemistry books which are extremely useful include:

Author/ Publisher

Name of Book

O.P. Tandon

Physical Chemistry

P.W.Atkins

Physical Chemistry

O.P. Tandon

Organic Chemistry

Morrison & Boyd

Organic Chemistry

O.P. Tandon

Organic Chemistry

Solomons

Organic Chemistry

J.D.Lee

Inorganic Chemistry

These books are helpful in clearing the concepts and contain various solved examples which give you an idea about the types of questions asked in the JEE.

This list of topics is highly significant in the sense that it reveals the chief areas which you cannot dare to ignore. But, that does not mean that you can completely rely on these topics. Suppose, if a single questions was asked form a particular section in 2013, it is quite possible that it may fetch around 3-4 questions this year. This list is only to give lead your preparation in the right direction.

Right strategy in the right direction is all what you need! All the best!
