Mystory@Yash Sharma: How my college education impacted my career
When I joined college, I had an idea about myself: I knew what kind of a person I was. What were my strengths and my weaknesses, but I had no idea about what were the different ways to do the things that I loved doing and at the same time, solve society’s problems. I didn’t know how to think globally, keeping different perspectives in mind.
After joining college, I met a lot of people who were similar to me but at the same time had different ways of thinking and that gave me an idea about how different people think and also how similar we all are from deep inside. Obviously, I got to learn about my subjects which helped in designing and analysis of things.
Publishing research papers with the help of my professors helped me learn about how we are solving real life problems using information technology and really how effective they can be. I had no idea that optimising a source code can save a lot of money for some people and can reduce price of a product dramatically. I got to learn how to think about a problem to find an effective solution and also how to find people who are interested in your solution.
I would say key things that helped me in college were guidance from seniors, guidance from professors, and the competitions organized within the college which really helped me measure my knowledge against other people and also got to learn from them.
College teaches you a lot but when you start working, you start to see everything from a business perspective. Working teaches you exactly how the technology is being implemented at various levels of society. When in college, you never realise the scale of technology, you don’t realise how difficult (or easy) it is to connect billions of people through technology. How writing a simple code is making life easier for millions of people. You also realise the true value of the work that you are doing and also you see the future path of the technologies and all of this knowledge really equips you to think about what’s coming next!
