NSIT is the Only Engineering College of Delhi University

In the ongoing placement session, Nidhi Gupta, a final year student in electronics and communications, bagged a much-coveted job in Deloitte Consulting. But what keeps her happy these days is not how her own career is progressing but how quickly the children of some construction workers are learning their ABCs in the Neighbourhood Project (which is a students' run social outreach programme) on the campus.

She is particularly happy because this project was allowed to run on campus, thanks to a faculty member who volunteered to give up her official room for the cause.

This deep social consciousness is not restricted only to NSIT's students and teachers. Over the years, former students are carrying on the good work at organisations they have been employed in. Mayank Aggarwal, a 2008 graduate from NSIT, recently convinced his employer to commit Rs 25,000 per month for LEU Foundation, an NGO (non government organisation) which is run primarily by the NSIT alumni.

While understanding the "physics of society", NSIT students don't let their studies suffer. Neighbourhood projects function only after classes are over. And they have even attempted to blend the two - studies and society -- by designing a Rs 100 solar cooker which was showcased at a social entrepreneurship conference held in Nagpur last year.

These initiatives will soon get an impetus when the alumni body will help the students set up a computer centre on campus for the children of construction labourers.

A group of 16 NSIT students are currently visiting Harvard University to participate in Model United Nations where they are representing Indonesia. While doing their preparation, they gave presentations on a range on subjects from science to politics, and from Vietnam War to the disintegration of Soviet Union.
