Here comes a Russian Education Fair to be held on May 18 & 19 at the Russian Cultural Centre, Chennai. As many as sixteen universities participating in the fair will collectively offer scholarship worth over Rs 6 crore for Indian students aiming to pursue their higher education in various specialities at these institutes.

As many as sixteen universities participating in the fair will collectively offer scholarship worth over Rs 6 crore for Indian students aiming to pursue their higher education in various specialities at these institutes.

The fair will be a platform for students to acquire information about how to obtain admission to graduate and post graduate courses in Russian universities imparting world class programmes including medicine and engineering courses. According to information, besides Chennai, the education fair will also interact with aspiring students in other parts of the country exhibiting through similar education fairs in the following cities:

Eligibility:

  • The admissions will be based on the 12th standard marks (Tamil medium students are also eligible to apply for the courses) for Bachelor degree programme
  • For under graduate program in medicine, students should have a minimum of 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology, which in the case of SC/ST and OBC students, is 40% as prescribed by the Medical Council of India
  • For under graduate program in engineering, the eligibility is a minimum of 40% in higher secondary.

Vladimir V. Mariy, Director of Russian Centre of Science and Culture, Cultural Department of the Russian Consulate in South India informed  that the cost of higher education in Russia is relatively cheaper because it is highly subsidized by the Government of the Russian Federation. Also, there are no pre-qualifying exams like CET, IELTS, etc. for admissions to universities in Russia. The admissions are based on the 12th standard marks for graduate programmes.

Some facts about studying at Russian Universities:

  • Medical education from leading Russian universities is recognized by the medical council of India (MCI), UNESCO, WHO and Medical Councils of leading countries like USA, Great Britain, Canada and Australia
  • There are totally 48 Government Medical Universities that are listed in the Directory of Medical schools of the World Health Organisation (WHO)
  •  The WHO and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) have rated the Moscow Medical Academy, The Russian State Medical University, and The St. Petersburg State Medical University in second, third, and tenth positions in the world respectively.
  • The academic programmes are taught in English and Russian medium.
  • In English medium, Russian language class is included which gives the knowledge of local language as an added asset for the student in interacting with local population.
  • Russian Medical Universities offer an M.D. degree, which is equivalent to M.B.B.S in India
  • The Medical Council of India recognises medical universities of Russia from Moscow, Tver, Volgograd, Kursk and Kazan
  • The duration of the Medical course is six years in English Medium and seven years in Russian medium as one year intense preparatory-cum-preliminary study in Russian is undergone by Russian Medium students.
  • In Russian Universities the duration of Engineering course is four years. In case of Russian medium it is preceded by a one-year preparatory faculty, where apart from teaching the Russian language basics of the subjects like Physics, Chemistry and math's will be taught.
  • Depending upon the University, place of study and course, the fee structure differs from US$ 1700 to US$ 4000 per year in the case of Russian Medium instruction
  • In the case of instruction in English Medium fee could be US$ 4000 to US$ 5200 per year. The student should pay the fee directly to the University.
  • The fee paid to the University includes tuition fee, hostel accommodation and study material.
  • Each student shall additionally need about US$ 1000 to US$ 1200 for his/her food and personal expenses per year.
  • Currently, there are about 10,000 Indian students studying at various engineering, arts & science, and medical institutions in Russia.
