Top seven IITs offering Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical Engineering (ME) is not a new discipline of engineering. As a matter of fact, various scientists claim that the invention of wheel is a product of mechanical engineering in 4th millennium BC (Bronze Age). Documented developments in this field can be traced back to 287 BC in the works of Archimedes. It emerged as a specialised engineering discipline during Industrial Revolution in the 18th century.

Mechanical engineering applies the basic principles such as mechanics, thermodynamics, kinematics, design and structure, materials science, manufacturing and electricity.

Today, the field has evolved immensely. It is intricately related to almost every other branch of engineering. One can see traces of the mechanical engineering in computers, communication and transport systems, industrial equipment, artificial intelligence, biotechnology, nuclear science and robotics.

Let us take a look at the top seven IITs offering this BTech (Mechanical Engineering) and what makes them the best:

1. Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay)

The best mechanical engineering (ME) department in our list has one of the largest departments in the country. The department offers 270 BTech seats. IIT Bombay is “known for research and projects in robotics, fluid dynamics, heat pumps, cryogenics, nuclear engineering, fracture mechanics, I. C. Engines, Combustion, CFD, CAD-CAM and other areas,” informs the official website.

There are three broad specialisations in the department - Design, Manufacturing and Thermal & Fluids Engineering. There are 20 laboratories. “The Department has decided recently to focus major research efforts in the following five areas: Computational Mechanics, Nuclear Thermal Hydraulics; CIM; Refrigeration, A/C and Cryogenics; and MEMS, NEMS and Mechatronics,” informs the institute.

2. Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi)

ME is not only one of the oldest departments, but also one of the biggest departments of IIT Delhi. The department currently has two B Tech programmes: B. Tech. (Mechanical Engineering) and B. Tech. (Production & Industrial Engineering)

The ME department has well equipped laboratories with computational facilities and resources both in terms of hardware and software. “Department has more than 250 computing systems and workstations loaded with wide range of software products covering all areas of mechanical engineering,” informs the official website.

3. Indian Institute of Technology (IIT Kanpur)

At IIT Kanpur, ME is one of the founding departments. The institute claims, “Mechanical Engineering Department played a leading role in evolving an 'Engineering Science' based curriculum, and served as a role model for many academic institutes in the country.”

The department is currently working on two major projects from the Railways and Department of Atomic Energy. The chief streams of study in the institute are

  • Solid Mechanics and Design
  • Fluid Mechanics and Thermal Sciences
  • Manufacturing Science
  • Mechatronics
  • Nulcear Technology

4. Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras)

The chief areas of study at IIT Madras are design, development and construction of nearly all of the physical systems and devices. The department has almost 700 undergraduates, 500 graduate students and over 60 faculty members.

5.  Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee)

The ME department was formed in 1946. At present the department offers courses in both Mechanical and Industrial Engineering. Some of the areas of study here are Machine Design Engineering, Thermal System Engineering, Production and Industrial Systems Engineering, Welding Engineering, Robotics, CAD and CAM.

6. Indian Institute of Technology - Banaras Hindu University (IIT-BHU)

The department, formed in 1919, has one of the largest departments in the country. Some of the areas of research undertaken by the department are Machine Design, Thermal and Fluid Engineering, Production Engineering and Industrial Management. The department has a good industry interface in Core Engineering industries, IT/ITeS, Manufacturing Industries, Consultancy and Finance Companies, Management Organisations and R & D labs.

7. Indian Institute of Technology (IIT Guwahati)

The department focuses on practical experiences and prepares students for entry-level work as a mechanical engineer. More than 300 students are currently pursuing BTech IIT Guwahati. The are 16 well-equipped 16 laboratories. “The major research areas include advanced / non-traditional machining processes, aerodynamics, bearing design, biomaterials, biomechanics, CAD/CAM, carbon nanotubes based nanocomposites, combustion, complaint mechanisms, composites, computational contact impact analysis, computational fluid mechanics, computational mechanics, condition monitoring, convection, refrigeration systems, energy conservation, error estimation, fatigue, wear and failure analysis, finit element methods, fluidization, fracture mechanics, gas dynamics, heat transfer, internal combustion engines, inverse problems, kinematics and dynamics of rigid multi-body systems, materials processing and characterization, mechanisms, mechatronics, metal casting, metal forming, micromanufacturing, multidisciplinary design optimization, multi-phase flows, nanofluids, non-linear dynamics, operations research, plasticity, propulsion, renewable energy, robotics, rotordynamics, shape memory alloy, smart structures, soft computing in design and manufacturing, welding, topology optimization, tribology, turbomachines, turbulence, vibration etc,” informed the official website.
