Your career after Diploma in Sciences
Diploma and Advanced Diploma courses in various engineering streams have been introduced to produce technical support personnel for related industries. They provide hands-on practical training and theoretical knowledge to the students. Diploma-level education is usually focused on developing skills of students for specific industries and provides them opportunity for industry interaction across a wide spectrum of related industries. Organisational projects provided by good institutes are a potent lure for students.
Diploma and Advanced diploma programmes offered by polytechnics are available in science streams such as Agriculture & Forestry, Biology, Chemistry, Maths, and Physics; or engineering specialisations such as Aeronautical/Aerospace Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, Automobile Engineering, Avionics Engineering, Information Technology, VLSI, Bio-Technology, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering and many more.
Eligibility
Students can now enter a three-year diploma in engineering programme in a polytechnic after Class 10th and prepare to enter the industry of their choice. Students should have studied Science, Mathematics, and English in Class 10th. However, students who have already done 12th, can also apply for Diploma and Advanced Diploma programmes in Engineering.
In 2003, semester system was introduced in diploma engineering programmes.
Many engineering institutes allow lateral entry for diploma holders to the third semester of their degree programmes in engineering. Normally students do two years of study and clear Class 12th, give an engineering entrance exam, and then study for four years to get a degree in engineering. Diploma holders can bypass the need for giving an entrance exam and still earn a B.E. or B.Tech degree in six years.
Career Prospects
Diploma holders in engineering streams know how to work at the grass root level of industries and maintain their equipment. They are considered suitable for their lower management and middle management positions.
Diploma holders can also appear for examination conducted by Institution of Engineers (India) to become the Associate Member of the Institution of Engineers (AMIE). This professional certification is considered equivalent to a degree in engineering. There are some engineering institutes that offer evening degree programmes to diploma holders who are working too.
