Continuing the trend seen in NEW DELHI: Continuing the trend seen in the last few years, the Delhi University's BCom (Programme) emerged as the most popular course this year too, as it received the maximum number of applications. This was followed by the BA (Programme).

The other most soughtafter courses are BCom (Honours), BA (Honours) Economics and BA (Honours) English. Among the Science courses, the popular ones are BSc (Honours) Physics, BSc (Honours) Chemistry and BSc (Honours) Electronics.

Shri Ram College of Commerce has received 42,000 forms for its BCom courses. Institutions such as Gargi College and Acharya Narendra Dev College also have the maximum applicants for BCom courses. But teachers said that the number of applications for a course may not be an indicator for its popularity.

"Most students apply for maximum courses that their marks allow. So, it is difficult to ascertain how popular the courses are," said S.K. Garg, principal, Deen Dayal Upadhaya College.

The number of applicants this year rose considerably across all the courses and colleges. So will this result in high-cutoffs? Most teachers said that the cut-offs could rise by one to two per cent across many courses.

"There has been an increase of 20 to 25 per cent in the number of applications we have received. The cut-offs will be marginally higher this year than last year. While the rise in BCom (Honours) will be marginally high, English (Honours) could see a rise of up to two per cent," said V.K. Kawatra, principal, Hansraj College.

Some teachers were surprised about the number of applications received for BA (Programme). "The courses which are vocational in nature give them an edge over the others," said Jitender Gill, associate professor, Janki Devi Memorial College.

As for the colleges, the ones at the campus remain the first choice for stu- dents with Ramjas College, Hansraj College and Kirori Mal College scoring over others. Among the women's colleges, Daulat Ram College, Gargi College, Miranda House and Maitreyi College saw the most number of applicants.

"The number of applications a college receives depends on the courses they offer and is not necessarily an indication of their popularity," said Gurpreet Singh Tuteja, deputy dean of Students' Welfare.
