New Delhi, June 16 - A huge rush was witnessed at Delhi University in the past two weeks for limited seats available in popular programmes such as BA English honours, which saw 9,240 students appearing in CATE (Common Aptitude Test for English) for 500-odd seats. More than 1.43 lakh forms were submitted for 54,000 seats until June 11 - the last day to apply for undergraduate programmes.

More than 1.43 lakh forms were submitted for 54,000 seats until June 11 - the last day to apply for undergraduate programmes.

Many students, in the madness to join the "over-hyped" courses, might have overlooked a number of interesting, job-oriented programmes. HT Horizons lists some attractive alternatives.

Non-science programmes

  • BA (honours) social work

It is run at two colleges - Aditi Mahavidyala and Bhim Rao Ambedkar College

Eligibility: 55 per cent in 10+2. Admission is offered after an entrance test and interview

What's so special about it? It opens doors to jobs in NGOs right after graduation

Who should opt for it? Those keen to make career in social work/ human-rights activism or related areas. It calls for unflinching passion

  • BA vocational studies

Run only in Kamla Nehru College

Eligibility: 10+2, merit based

What's so special about it? This is again a job-oriented programme that equips you with skills and knowledge related to advertising, sales management and sales promotion

Who should opt for it? Those wanting to go in for sales and advertising jobs

  • BA office administration and secretarial practice and other vocational courses

These courses are offered by the College of Vocational Studies

Eligibility: 10+2, merit

What's so special about it? Unlike other DU programmes, these teach you everything you need to know about the corporate world, such as marketing, insurance, materials management, office administration, retail management, working for small and medium enterprises

Who should opt for it? Those who want to get into a routine 9-to-5 job job after they graduate

  • BSc in physical education

This is offered by the Indira Gandhi Institute of Physical Education and Sports Sciences

Eligibility: 10+2, an aptitude for sports and should have been a player in one game at the state level

What's so special about it? This is the only DU college that prepares you for a career as a physical education teacher/coach

Who should opt for it? Those who are crazy about sports

  • Bachelor of mass media and mass communication

It is run at Indraprastha College

Eligibility: 10+2, admission happens on the basis of an entrance test, to be held on June 26

What's so special about it? You can get into the media - news channel, production house or advertising or PR agency

Who should opt for it? Anyone wanting to take up a career as a journalist

Science programmes

  • BSc occupational therapy

It is run at Pt Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Institute for the physically handicapped

Eligibility: 10+2 with atleast 50 per cent in best four (science subjects only).

Entrance test has already taken place on June 13

What's so special about it? You can become a paramedical professional after successfully completing this four-and-a-half-year programme at this autonomous institute run by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment

Who should opt for it? Anyone seeking a career in healthcare

  • PG diploma in forensic science

It is run only at the Khalsa College

Eligibility: BSc with 55 per cent, merit

What's so special about it? It gives you an opportunity to go to the University of Fraser Valley, Canada and finish an MA in criminal justice. The college may start a BSc in forensic science this year

Who should opt for it: Those interested in a career in forensic science
