My son Samarth Garg has just appeared for his Class X Boards. He is good in humanities subjects, such as politics, sports, geography and history. He also keeps abreast of national and international events by reading newspapers and watching television. He uses the Internet to interact with members of international groups, which helps him with projects. In recognition of his contribution, he was selected by his school for a trip to Poland, scheduled for this year.

This year, Samarth discontinued tuition classes and decided to prepare for the Boards on his own. However, he could not devote enough time to study but seemed confident about what he had learned in class. What undid his efforts was that he was bullied at school and consequently fell ill.

The school has decided not to send my son on the trip to Poland, which has caused him further distress. Please advise us on what we should do. Pradeep Garg

The issues you have mentioned pose quite a challenge during adolescence. I can sense your son’s discontinuing his tuition classes is notthe only reason behind the sudden decline in his performance. Being bullied and other issues must have distressed him quite a lot, too.

As a parent, you need to give him full emotional support. You will need to help him accept the fact that ups and downs are a part of life and no matter how bad things get, life has to go on. Right now, the top priority is to cope with studies. In this regard, you may want to consider continuing the tuitions. Improvement in his academic performance will automatically help him regain self-confidence and give him the courage to overcome other challenges. Since he is a very bright student, it won’t take him too much time to get back in the saddle. Work with the school in this endeavour.

As far as his trip to Poland is concerned, you may have to ignore it for now because his mental state is such that he should not be left alone. Also remember that you will need to be very patient with him.
