SIES Arts, Science and Commerce College Offers An A-grade Student Life
The SIES Arts, Science and Commerce College was inaugurated on June 20, 1960 by Shri Y. B. Chavan, the first Chief Minister of Maharashtra, to serve the ever-growing educational needs of students from suburbs in north and central Mumbai, and was the gift of the south Indians in Mumbai to the then newly-born State of Maharashtra. The commerce stream at the degree level was started in 1980-81. Affiliated to the University of Mumbai, the college has a strength of over 4,000 students drawn from all sections of the city.
The college has earned a name for itself due to commitment and dedication of principals such as professors A. B. Shah (1960-63), Ram Joshi (1963-77), who later became the vice-chancellor, University of Mumbai, P. S. Ramaswamy (1977-87), K. M. Apte (1987-89), S. Ramanathan (1989-1996), V. Padmanaban (1996-2003), and R. Gopalkrishnan (in charge principal 2003-2005). Currently, Dr. Harsha Mehta is the principal of the college.
The NAAC peer team has awarded an ‘A' grade to the college.
Infrastructure and Facilities
The courses offered in the college are BA, B.Com., B.Sc., BMM, BMS and B.Sc. (IT). Masters courses are offered in science subjects such as physics, microbiology, organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, biochemistry, computer science etc.
The college is situated at walking distance from the Sion railway station on the central line. It is also close to the Kings Circle station. The campus has a well-stocked library, a placement cell and a counselling centre. The counselling centre has facilities for both career counselling and personal counselling. The NSS and NCC departments of the college are quite active and regularly send students for NSS camps.
The college annual festival is called Visions, which is an inter-college festival wherein all departments of the college organise events. Last year the biotechnology department organised Genograzia, botany organised Kalpavri-ksha, IT organised Phoenix. Xzooberance is the festival organised by the zoology department while Ziegers is a four-year-old computer science festival. The BMM department organises its own festival- Copyrights in December.
The college has an Ecosophy Club which conducts events related to environmental conservation and use of sources of energy.
The college has a gymkhana and a gymnasium for fitness. A sports day is held in the month of December.
