Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in her Budget speech this year announced a new central university in Leh

Union Cabinet has approved the establishment of a Central University in the Union Territory of Ladakh. The central government has earmarked Rs 750 crore for the establishment of a central university in Ladakh.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in her Budget speech this year announced that the central government will establish a new central university in Leh, the capital of the Union Territory of Ladakh.

Making the announcement, Union Information and Broadcasting Minister, Anurag Thakur told reporters in Delhi: “This will address regional imbalances in higher education level and promote overall growth & development of the UT.”

According to the central government establishment of a new central university in Ladakh will stimulate intellectual current within society in the region.

There are a total of 49 central universities in the country which offer multidisciplinary courses undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Some of the most sought-after central universities include names like Delhi University (DU), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and the Central University of Hyderabad.
