What I learnt from my course & college: Supriya Dhara
College life can be considered as the best time in an individual’s life, not in the terms of fun but because of what we learn and how we develop.
I am a Humanities student in a world where everyone forces you to opt for Science stream. My story is no different. I would like to start with a mistake of mine. After my Class 10th results, I took Science, despite having zero interest in it. And you know the reason – yes, the unwanted pressure from everybody. But, I blame myself for not being able to make a decision. I ended up wasting one precious year. But then, I took Humanities and just rocked it, as I topped in the 11th standard.
My love for Humanities developed when I was in the 9th standard. I was interested in everything related to literature and politics. I loved reading newspaper, but not about inventions. I liked to read about Indian and world politics. I started developing an interest in Indian mythology too, and all these small interests were enough to indicate to me that I wanted to pursue Arts/ Humanities.

I am taking pride in declaring that after completing Higher Secondary, I did not leave my favourite subject or my best interest, Political Science. And now, I am a student of Political Science Honours in Janki Devi Memorial College (JDMC), Delhi University (DU).
I gave uttermost importance to the course. I wanted to learn everything about Political Science, so college was not my first priority. Everyone’s first priority should be the course of their choice. But luckily, the college which I got in the first cut-off was also a good one. You may ask me that why I did not try in other colleges of South or North Campus. Honestly, getting JDMC after scoring 90% (best of four) was more than enough. Also, this college was convenient for me to go to because of the metro. I feel lucky.
How I cracked college admission
My admission was purely based on merit of my Class 12th Boards results. I still remember how it all happened. The first cut-off in JDMC for general category was 87% and I was eligible. So, with all the required documents, I reached the college. I waited for around an hour, and then my documents were verified. After around three hours, I submitted my documents. Then, I made the online fee payment, after which the admission process was complete.
Here, I would like to thank my friend who waited with me for five hours in 40 degrees temperature.
Oh yes, I had a back-up plan too. I was going to appear for an entrance test for a vocational course in Indraprastha University. But coincidentally, before the test date, my admission in DU was confirmed. If you are soon going for admissions, I would suggest you to keep a backup plan as you cannot depend only on one university.
Our journey for admission to the college starts from the Board exams only, so start preparing from the very first day of your 12th standard. And if you are planning to give some entrance exams, then go through the syllabus and prepare well. Competition is tough.
My college life
Once you are in college, you realise many things, many truths of life. I am a student of second year and in this one year, I have learnt about myself and I am still learning. In college, you will realise that now you are an adult, no more a school kid who is being looked after by parents and teachers. Now, nobody will force you to attend classes, but you will know the value of each and every lecture just after one semester.
Being an introvert, I have come to know that the world is fast and I am slow. I will be honest, I have even cried for not being able to interact with anyone and feeling lonely, but then slowly, I have learnt that these three years will be gone soon and if I do not do something remarkable then I will have to regret my whole life. So, I learnt how to be happy alone.
I have made some mistakes too, which were like not paying attention to my studies and career and getting distracted. But everything comes to the track once you accept that you need to learn from your mistakes. Presently, I am doing a content writing internship and I am getting exposure to the world. I am learning. I am growing. If you are a sensitive person like me, then I am giving you a warning – do not let others and the circumstances break you. You have to fight and just keep trying. Even for one internship, you will have to wait and do hard work, so be patient. This is what my college and my course taught me.
And while selecting your career, listen to your heart and brain, not what your parents and relatives say. Do research on the scope and syllabus of the course. Select something which you love to do or study. Mind you, one wrong decision will take you metres away from your destination. Do not repeat the mistake I made.
