The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, Government of India, founded the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT), Gangtok, as one of its units. Currently, NIELIT Gangtok provides both UG and PG students with close to 20 short-term and non-formal courses. All employees and students are welcome to use the central library and reading area at NIELIT Gangtok. About 300 books in the library are pertinent to the training sessions and courses offered. Two types of labs are available: one for embedded systems and the other for VLSI computers. A seminar hall, a conference room, and the NKN facility—a multi-Gigabit pan-India network—are among the other amenities.

Central Tool Room and Training Centre provides programmes including Certificate, PG Diploma, After 10th Diploma, UG Diploma in streams such as Engineering, IT & Software, Business & Management Studies, Design, and are excellent for students to build their careers. The institute has specializations in Mechanical Engineering, Information Technology, Mechatronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering.
