Below, we have listed five mistake that a candidate should avoid or be prepared for:

1. Back-up plan

The first two slots had similar exam pattern. In all probability, third and fourth slots of CAT 2014 should also contain similar pattern. But what if IIMs and TCS decide to change the pattern and surprise candidates? So, have a back plan. In any case, the ideal strategy should be to focus on your strength areas, but manage to score above sectional cut-offs.

2. Arrive on time

Please reach the centre before the reporting time mentioned on the CAT 2014 admit card. Shiksha correspondents witnessed two candidates being sent away from a test centre at Greater Noida. These candidates had arrived for the first morning CAT 2014 slot between 9:00 to 9:15 am. Both the candidates were refused to enter the centre. Similar incidents were observed at other centres across the centre. Better to be safe than lose a year.

3. Documents

Arrange all your documents on time. Get the originals, photocopies and affidavits ready. The invigilators on the gate are quite thorough with checking. β€œI had accidently carried my last year’s college Identity card. The officers on gate refused to let me enter. Luckily, I live nearby and parents rushed home to get a different ID card,” said a CAT 2014 aspirant (on condition of anonymity). Another aspirant was left teary after the CAT 2014 officials refused to let him enter the centre because of lack of proper identity documents.

4. Testing Console

Go through the testing console – mock test – available on the official website. Candidates are advised to go through the entire test. View the colour palette, get a feel of the navigation panel such as how to see the entire question paper at one go, or mark answer with colour options. Do not fumble with the navigation system during the CAT 2014 second test on November 22.

5. Composure

CAT 2014 is a five hour (290 minutes) long affair – 170 minutes of test and reporting time is 120 minutes before the exam. To this, add the time to commute to the centre. So, don’t waste your stamina.

β€œTemperament and composure is the key. Too much of excitement and too much of nervousness both are equally harmful,” says Parasharan Chari.
