MAT December 2014 written exam, conducted on December 7, presented no new surprises. The paper was on the expected pattern and candidates had to attempt 200 questions in 150 minutes (two hours thirty minutes). Below, let’s take a look at MAT December 2014 analysis by Shiksha.com.

MAT February dates declared!

There were five sections in MAT exam: Indian and Global Environment, Language Comprehension, Data Analysis and Sufficiency, Mathematical Skills, Intelligence and Critical Reasoning. Each section has 40 questions with four multiple choices. For every right answer, one mark is awarded and for every wrong answer one-fourth (0.25) marks is deducted.

AIMA does not give raw scores. It only presents scaled score and percentile in each section. It also gives the overall composite score and overall percentile.

Let us take a look at the MAT analysis of the individual sections:

 

Data Analysis and Sufficiency

The section comprised of problems from Data Interpretation (DI), Data Sufficiency (DS) and Data Comparison areas.  According to test takers, DI had somewhere around 25 questions. Questions and topics included pie charts, data sets, line and bar graphs, percentage, average, fractions, caselets and data comparison. Overall, the section was moderate to difficult.

Total mark allotted to this section is 40. A good attempt would be 15 to 16 questions with 95% accuracy.

 

Intelligence and Critical Reasoning

Candidates preparing for other MBA entrance tests like CAT will find the section easy to moderate. Topics covered in Analytical Reasoning are Distribution Qs, Blood Relations, sequences, Verbal Analogies and Calendar-based questions. Critical reasoning included statements, conclusions, assertions & reasons, cause and effect.

Total mark allotted to this section is 40. According to our MAT analysis, a good attempt would be about 18 questions in 30 minutes.

 

Mathematical Skills

Various tests takers found this section difficult and time-consuming.  The section had questions from both basic arithmetic and higher Math. Questions and topics ranged from areas like percentages, profit and loss, geometry, trigonometry, mensuration, probability, permutation and combination, time, distance, averages, ratio and proportions, equations, simple and compound interest, heights and distance.

Overall, the section was moderate to difficult. An attempt of 13 questions with 95% accuracy can fetch a good score.

 

Indian and Global Environment

As expected, the questions were based on current affairs and static general knowledge. Candidates following the new regularly will find the section easy. Overall, the section can be classified as moderate.

What would be the overall score out of 160 excluding GK section to fetch above 99.5 percentile ?
