All the students who have been suspended allegedly wore the hijab in the classroom, despite the college authorities urging them that their conduct was in violation of state government and the High Court's orders.
A college in Dakshina Kannada has suspended six students for wearing the headscarf despite being given several warnings. The Government First Grade College at Uppinangady has suspended six students for a week after the Principal conducted a meeting with the faculty members in this regard.
As per the reports, all the students who have been suspended allegedly wore the hijab in the classroom, despite the college authorities urging them that their conduct was in violation of state government and the High Court's orders. Even after the suspension, another group of students came to college wearing hijab, following which some students wore saffron shawl in protest and demanded they should not be allowed to enter classes, forcing the police to intervene.
However, the authorities did not allow both hijab or saffron shawl-wearing students to attend classes. Meanwhile, the hijab issue at the University College in Mangaluru that was reported last week has continued to persist. The college principal and authorities have urged the students to not come to campus wearing hijab, however, the effort went in vain. A group of students had also staged a protest at the Mangaluru's University College campus last week alleging that a few Muslim girl students are attending classes wearing the headscarf.
On March 15, the Karnataka High Court dismissed the petitions filed by a group of Muslim students, seeking permission to wear the hijab on campus and inside the classrooms. The three-judge bench of the court consisting of Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi, Justice Krishna S Dixit and Justice J M Khazi further noted that the prescription of school uniforms is only a reasonable restriction, constitutionally permissible, which the students cannot object to.
After the High Court order, the Department of Pre-University Education has made uniforms prescribed by the College Development Committee, compulsory for Pre-University (PU) students from the academic year 2022-23.
